Package content

The Mecool M8S PRO comes in a carton of small dimensions in line with the size of the TV-Box itself. In the upper area of the box, we have a generic text and the mark is only seen on a sticker placed a posteriori on one side. Inside we find the TV Box and in a lower section, we find the IR remote control, HDMI cable, manual in English and a 5V 2A power adapter.

Product Details

The Mecool M8S PRO is made of plastic and is very light, on all sides we find a large number of ventilation slots. On the front, we have a status LED that changes from red to blue and the receiver of the IR remote.

REVIEW: Mecool M8S PRO with SoC Amlogic S912 and Android 7.1

On the side where we find a microSD card reader and two USB 2.0 Type-A conventional ports.

In the rear area of the Mecool M8S PRO we have the remaining connectors, round power plug, HDMI 2.0b with 4K @ 60fps output, 10/100 Ethernet and analog video connector for old TVs.

At the bottom of the Meco M8S PRO we have very small rubber feet that do not lift almost the box, in the front we can see a small hole that gives us access to the reset to update from a PC, in this area we also have many slots ventilation.

Connection and desks

We connect the Mecool M8S PRO to the mains and the system is started directly as this TV Box has no power button. The laucher that brings by default is quite conventional and is the usual we have the Mecool models. In the icon of TV Center we have a version of KODI, direct access to a File Explorer, list of applications, TV-Box settings and installed Chrome browser. In a top row we have the + icon to add the apps we want on the desktop. Unfortunately although we install another Launcher whenever we start we will have this launcher and we can not put another one by default, we have to go and change it by hand at each start.

Boot time: 22 seconds

The list of default applications as we see is quite short, we have the classic apps to share content like Media center, Miracast and AirPin in addition to the MX player and the system update icon.

In the following video you can see how to launch our Android TV Box, ways to control it, general setup tricks and how we can change the default launcher.

In Mecool M8S PRO as we see we do NOT have navigation bar but if we have in the upper zone the notifications curtain with quick adjustments of Android ..

As standard with the Meco M8S PRO we have Android 7.1.1 and in this system the icons of settings of the TV Box we have them on the side and are shown while we have the desktop in the background, a way to miss the screen enough.

As usual in the systems based on the latest SoC from Amlogic we also have the classic settings of Android that allow us to fine tune our configuration even more, to reach them just click on More Settings.

In the following video we explain in detail all the settings of the Android TV Box with SoC Amlogic, we also link to different guides and comment tricks to get the maximum performance.

Android system

Installed as standard in the Mecool M8S PRO we have as operating system Android 7.1.1, a system to the last. The kernel as we see is quite old, specifically 3.14.29 and the compilation is dated 2017-04-19, with this version we have done the review that you can read on the following pages.

Brand support

REVIEW: Mecool M8S PRO with SoC Amlogic S912 and Android 7.1

With the Mecool M8S PRO we have a scarce support but as we have seen in other models of the brand possibly have several firmwares in the coming months, we can not expect much more than that.

This is a model with good support you can read our guide what it means to have brand support.

At the core of the MecoS M8S PRO we have the extended SoC from Amlogic S912 which includes eight 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processors and a Mali-T820mp3 GPU. A SoC as we see very powerful working between 100 Mhz and 2.02 GHz (limited to 1.5GHz) depending on the performance needs of the system. This SoC incorporates hardware decoding support for the H.265, 10-bit H.265 video codec and is capable of outputting video at 4K @ 60fps thanks to the HDMI 2.0b video output connector.

Storage and RAM

In the Mecool M8S PRO we have integrated a total of 16 GB of storage memory eMMc, from this storage memory we have actually available about 12 GB, a figure that allows us to install quite a few apps. In models with SoC Amlogic we have a single partition in the storage memory thing that facilitates the management of our files.

In this hardware we have integrated with 2 GB of DDR4 RAM that behave normally, of this amount we are available about 2.1 GB in the usual way. There is another version with 3GB of DDR4 RAM, if we are going to surf a lot or use powerful games we might be interested.

We passed several tests to the memory and storage on the Meco M8S PRO using the SD bench app that gives us correct figures although they are far from the models of the first brands, as it is logical in the Chinese products we have what we paid.

Consumption and temperatures

In the section of electrical consumption the Mecool M8S PRO using the SoC S912 gives us results in the line of this type of TV-Box if we put the SoC to the limit with games with 3D graphics only are reached in specific moments the 6.1 W Of peak consumption. The temperature of the box remains controlled and although the upper zone if it is noticed warm does not affect the operation of the device as we have checked.

Google Play and Amazon Apps Store

REVIEW: Mecool M8S PRO with SoC Amlogic S912 and Android 7.1

From the Google play store or we have trouble finding the most common apps and download them automatically in the internal memory. With the Amazon Apps Store equal result, a good alternative to Google that also gives us a free app a day something that always goes well.

In Mecool M8S PRO as we verify we do not have serial root, something that does not affect services like for example Netflix or Amazon Prime Video as we will see in our analysis in the corresponding section.

Power Off / Standby

In the Mecool M8S PRO when pressing the button on the remote the TV-Box turns off completely, if we leave the button pressed a menu appears with options for full shutdown or restart automatically, as we have few options.

Video and audio connections

In the Meco M8S PRO we have as core SoC of AMLogic S912 that has support of video output by HDMI 2.0a which gives us a maximum resolution of 4K @ 60MHz with 10 bit of color and it is compatible with HDR if we have a TV compatible. We also have the HDR mode if we have a TV that supports this mode that adds more colors and contrast to the screen image, interestingly we have an option SDR to HDR that emulates HDR.

If we connect this device to a compatible TV we have in the list 720p, 1080p and we get up to 4K resolution, among these modes are 24p to synchronize with the cinema mode. As usual in this type of SoC are missing brightness, contrast and gamma controls.

In the Mecool M8S PRO system we have an automatic refresh adjustment option but it does NOT work, we will have to change the resolution and refresh the system manually to avoid the Judder effect.

In the Android settings in Developer mode we have support to change the sRGB something that is necessary on some older TV models that have incompatibility with the current color modes.

DLNA, Miracast and Airplay

In Meco M8S PRO installed by default we have the usual DLNA app that in this case is called MediaCenter. With this system we can access the multimedia content that we have in our device easily using an app like BubbleUPnP from an Android mobile or from a PC with the Windows file explorer.

It is possible to share the screen using the Miracast app with the NO we had problem using a Smartphone LG G5, as we know this type of connections depends on many factors and we can not ensure that works perfectly in all scenarios.

We also have the AirPlay Pro app that allows us to share content from Apple devices the results are correct even though we had some unexpected closure sharing some specific content.

Videoconferencing on Meco M8S PRO using the Hangouts and Skype app works correctly using a simple Logitech C170 webcam, overall good results with these app that installs directly from Google Play.

WIFI and Ethernet

The Mecool M8S PRO has a Wireless Adapter Wifi ac Dual Band and 10/100 Ethernet port, with them we have connected with an ASUS RT-AC1200G + Router, a midrange equipment. We transfer files over a SAMBA network and connected through Wifi 2.4Ghz we have achieved a speed of about 25 mbps, with the network of Wifi 5Ghz we reach about 25 mbps. This model has a 10/100 network connector with which we use a Category 6 network cable to guarantee the speed, using this connection we reach about 52 mbps which is a good figure. As we see the 5Ghz adapter can be said to be symbolic and the 10/100 network adapter fulfills its purpose.

By testing the network adapters in use of streaming we use the iPerf measurement tool with which we have the maximum connection speed in each type of network. With this figure we have how far we can go using the available connections, the final performance will depend on our internet provider, the speed contracted, the distance of our wifi network, Ethernet cabling and other factors. In general we have correct results although the wifi adapter could be much better.

We test the wifi coverage with the equipment as always located at a distance of about 5mts and with a wall we verified that we have connection without cuts, the signal reaches a good level with about 51 dBm, a correct result but not for shooting Rockets

Integrated with the Mecool M8S PRO wifi adapter we also have Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity with which we have no major problems in detecting other devices, we have tested some BT helmets and some one BT gamepad without major problem.

Along with the Meco PRO M8S we have a small remote control that allows us to perform the basic functions to control the TV Box. This command has copying options in the upper left, in the back we have some instructions where we explain how to copy keys from other controls.

Normally with the TV-Box Amlogic we have always installed a remote control server but curiously with the Meco M8S PRO unfortunately does not have this service, we assume that is to include Android 7.1.1 or by skipping. We can use CetusPlay as an alternative to control it from our mobile.

Gamepad and games

We can play with the Mecool M8S PRO by connecting an Xbox 360 gamepad controller that recognizes it without problems, also works correctly the Xiaomi Gamepad by Bluetooth if we match it from system settings. We can use them in games with this type of support, in general we will not have problems with conventional command of PC.

The power of the Mali-T820MP3 GPU that integrates the SoC Amlogic S912 is enough to move any Android game without problems with the settings to the maximum, as we will see in the performance tests this new GPU has a performance far superior to the Mali-450mp5 Of the SoC S905.

REVIEW: Mecool M8S PRO with SoC Amlogic S912 and Android 7.1

As for performance the Mecool M8S PRO with the SoC Octa core Amlogic S912 gives us results in the line of other devices with a similar configuration, as we see this SoC far surpasses the S905x but it is far from the new Rockchip RK3399. With this hardware we have enough power to move any current app, the system moves smoothly opening games or utilities, we have not had unexpected application closures in the system and multitasking behaves normally.

All the comparative models that appear in the tables have been analyzed in our website, you can read their detailed reviews in this link.

With this famous test we give an idea of the general performance of the device and we can buy it with many other models since it is one of the most widespread tests.

This test gives us a value of the performance of the device on the web navigation (we always use the browser preinstalled) and the gross performance of the SoC with a series of calculation tests.

The graphical performance test par excellence with a fairly solid continuity in results which helps us to compare the performance of GPUs historically.

Test video formats

In the usual tests of video reproduction the Mecool M8S PRO gives us good results in general, in the line of models with SoC Amlogic S912. It is possible to play the most common files without major problems. We can watch videos at resolutions to 1080P or also in 4K format encoded with h.265 codec, this SoC also supports HDR modes with 10 bit of color, an option that we can activate in your settings if we have a TV compatible with this mode .

Installed in the system we have the TV Center app which is a renowned version of KODI 17. If we do not like this version we can delete it and download KODI official without problems from the Google Play store, then install the addons we want in a simple way.

You can read our Manual to install Addons in KODI in a simple way to get the most out of this device seeing all kinds of content.

Test audio formats

In the Mecool M8S PRO we have the SoC Octa core Amlogic S912 which as we know is NOT licensed for use of audio pass through for DD and DTS. For sound testing we use our Yamaha RXV-577 AV receiver and check that the device has audio pass through for DD 7.1 and DTS 5.1, the results are variable depending on the software we use, we recommend using the serial player. Interestingly we have an option called Surround Sound that we do not know that does since as always is not documented.

For our performance tests with the Mecool M8S PRO we the use serial browser where and we have no problems opening a good number of tabs thanks to its 2 GB of DDR4 RAM. The contents that are reproduced in HTML5 do not have major problems with the included serial browser that has a good general compatibility, we can install the browser that we like most if we do not convince this one.

At the level of the DRM certificates necessary for some paid Streaming apps we only have Google Widevine L3, something habitual in this type of models.

Youtube and streaming apps

From Google Play we install some of the most common Streaming app to watch online TV that we downloaded from the Play Store like Clan TV, Mitele and the like we have no problems. This TV-Box can play Youtube up to 1080p without problems with the version that comes installed as standard.

Movistar +

Breaking the habit of TV-Box with SoC S912 with Android 6.1 with the new Android 7.1.1 this app works properly with the Meco M8S PRO, we can advance the movies without problems and view live content like football, a good point to favor.

You can read all the details on this subject in our special article Movistar + on Android.

This service goes well and as we know we can see contents in SD quality since this device is not approved by the company for a higher quality of streaming, the app that brings installed serial already works correctly.

You can read our Guide of Netfix in HD quality to leave doubts.

Using the HBO platform we can say that the app does NOT work, we have an application close when trying to reproduce any content of this platform.

You can read all the details about this streaming service in our HBO HD Guide.

Amazon Prime Video

We test Amazon Prime Video and we can say that the SI app works and can play content in SD quality without problems, a service that is gaining interesting content little by little.

You can read about this streaming service in our Guide to Amazon Prime Video HD.

Orange TV

We try to start testing Orange TV and although the app can be installed correctly the system does not work since it tells us that our device can be rooted, something that always says we have root or not.

  • Android 7.1.1
  • Compatible Movistar +
  • Stable system
  • 2 GB DDR4 RAM
  • Economic

  • Red 10/100 and justito wifi
  • Improved system settings

As we see in our analysis the Mecool M8S PRO is a TV Box that defends correctly within its price sector but does not stand out especially since the network hardware and internal storage is quite basic. We highlight as a novelty the Android 7.1.1 system that has surprised us well with the Streaming service of Movistar + that now works perfectly for both content on demand and live broadcasts like football, we hope that when this new software base arrives Other TV-Box the same thing.

Once seen in detail in our review we can say that the Mecool M8S PRO is a correct choice if we are looking for something at a fair price and we do not have an extreme network needs. The system moves smoothly and we will also have the latest version of Android installed although it is a little tricky because we continue with an old kernel. In general a correct product if we get it at a price adjusted as our link.
